When you shall go out to war

כִּי־תֵצֵא לַמִּלְחָמָה עַל־אֹיְבֶיךָ

   

Parshat Ki-Teizai- כִּי תֵצֵא contains the most commandments of all the Parshat of the Torah -27 positive and 47 negative. The Parsha is divided into 44 (8) passages (parshiot) of text.

Although the Parsha both begins and ends with commandments arising in a war context, the overwhelming majority of the Parsha details commandments of morality between man and his fellow at home. Thus the Torah teaches us that if man is able to control his evil inclination in time of war against his enemy, how much more so he will be able to control it at home with regard to his fellow.

The words “Ki-Teizai”- כִּי תֵצֵא mean “When you shall go out”.

The going out is to “the war”- לַמִּלְחָמָה.

The gematria of the words “Ki-Teizei” “When you go out”- כִּי תֵצֵא is 521=8.

The gematria of the words “to the war”- לַמִּלְחָמָה is 153=1+8 or + 1 word=10=1.

The gematria of the words “When you go out to the war”- כִּי תֵצֵא לַמִּלְחָמָה is 674=17=8.

The going out to war is not just a physical one but also a spiritual one; “going out” one against the evil inclination who appears at the most opportune moments to lead us astray in our daily activities from serving Hashem. Thus getting through each day is both a spiritual and physical battle from the enemy outside and the enemy within. 

The 44^th and final parsha of Parshat Ki Teitzei details with the constant war against “Amalek”- עֲמָלֵק the ultimate spiritual and physical evil which has to be utterly destroyed by the Jewish People in order to complete the mission of World Rectification- תיקון עולם.
